RAJARATNAM CALLS SENTENCE "GROTESQUELY SEVERE" PDF Print E-mail

Image
Son received 42 yr. sentence
Galleon Group co-founder Raj Rajaratnam called the punishment sought by the government for his insider trading convictions "grotesquely severe".  The government requested a sentence of 19 1/2 to 24 /12 years on 14 criminal counts of conspiracy and securities fraud.  At age 54, Rajaratnam complained that the sentence would guarantee he would die in prison and is "more than the average sentence imposed for kidnapping and hostage-taking, sexual abuse, robbery, arson and child pornography" (http://goo.gl/xYUt7).  Rajaratnam conveniently did not compare his sentence to those received by African-American males, even involving non-violent crimes.  The son of Ann Shelton (pictured) of Columbus, Mississippi is currently serving a 42 year sentence for a first offense involving less than two ounces of crack cocaine.  That said, the United States is the world's biggest jailor with 743 per 100,000 of the population incarcerated.  Rwanda and Russia rank second and third with 595 and 568 per 100,000 of the population, respectively.  For African-American males the figures are exacerbated with 4,797 per 100,000 of the poulation incarcerated.  In defending its sentence for Rajaratnam, the government reponded that:

SEC WHISTLEBLOWER TELLS "WHAT HAD HAPPENED" AGAIN PDF Print E-mail

Notes on criminal conspiracy?
An Securities and Exchange Commission lawyer recently accused the SEC of illegally destroying thousands of documents related to early stage investigations over the past two decades.  The files contained records of nearly 10,000 inquiries involving the likes of Bernie Madoff, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Holdings, and Citigroup that were to investigate these firms' role in the 2008 financial crisis.  Apparently the SEC whistleblower, Darcy Flynn, told "what had happened" and "what he had seen and heard" on his previous employer as well.  In 1993 Flynn received a $2.7 million reward for for exposing alleged Medicare fraud as an insurance claims auditor in Michigan.  Flynn joined the SEC in 1995 to probe accounting scams and insider-trading, but decided to report wrongdoing orchestrated by the SEC instead.

HAS THE MARKET CRASHED YET? PDF Print E-mail

The Dow Jones has fallen from its six month high of 12,807 on May 3rd to 10,818 at August 19th, representing a decline of approximately 16%.  Its year-to-date low is 10,718 on August 10th when the government were embroiled in the "debt ceiling" debate.  That YTD low doesn't look out of reach as (i) the debt ceiling debate brought the public consciousness that US expenditures far exceeds it revenue receipts (ii) the economy is still in decline and (iii) uncertainty about the immediate future has caused both investors and business executives to hoarding cash insteading of investing it.  As you know, the Shock Exchange predicted this Great Recession ( http://clicky.me/4WW ) and Market crash ( http://t.co/2Mi07bw ) well in advance of those events occurring.  You are welcome in advance.

Ralph recognized by John Thompson III. NYC's best kept secret?

Ralph Baker III (Packer Collegiate 2013) has been under the radar for a while now.  Having played for the Shock Exchange for the past five years, he has improved his game each season.  It appears that all of the hard work and dribbling drills, shooting drills, "blue line defense", etc. are starting to pay dividends.  In June the 6'0" rising junior helped lead his team to the championship game at the Georgetown Camp where they fell one point shy of the hardware.

DSK has got to be German
The Germans say "At sea and in the courtroom you are in God's hands."  Former IMF head, Dominique Strauss Kahn, must be German because he walked out of a Manhattan courthouse last week free of assault charges brought against him three months ago.  At the time of the charges, Strauss-Kahn was the leading candidate to be the next president of France.  The charges which were brought on by a maid at New York's Sofitel Hotel, cost Strauss-Kahn his job at the IMF and possibly the French presidency ( http://clicky.me/5KwA ).  It appeared to be an open and shut case but the witness' credibility began to unravel over time.  The prosecution also because suspicious that she knew Strauss-Kahn was wealthy and was attempt to profit from the case via an eventual lawsuit against him.  According to the Wall Street Journal,

SHOCK EXCHANGE GETS IT IN AT DEAN ST PDF Print E-mail

Image This year the Shock Exchange stepped it up to compete in the high school division at Dean St park in Brooklyn.  The 16U kids went head-to-head again whomever showed up, whether it was current high school kids, kids who just graduated, JUCO, etc.  This was a lot more competitive than the AAU teams we faced and a lot more open court, fast-paced style of play.  However, we held our own and gave as good as we got.  We soon became a crowd favorite of both fans who saw us as the underdog and those who wanted to see us sent home.  Either way it was a lot of fun and a great experience.
