News The latest news from the New York Shock Exchange

Kemal Dervis (left) with Wyclef Jean The Internet has been abuzz for weeks with Beyonce's new song "Girls, Girls, We Run The World", particularly after she "shut it down" with a live performance at the Billboard awards. Beyonce fans and critics alike agree that this was one of the best, if not the best, live performance ever. Since her days with Destiny's Child, Mrs. Knowles-Carter has been able to capture the pulse of women everywhere. Songs like like "Can You Pay My Bills" and "Two The Left" have defined a generation of girls as they have gone from high school and college grads to grown ups caked out. My attraction to Destiny's Child and Beyonce over the years has been the fact that they are authentic, passionate, and sing from experience. "Girls We Run The World" left me curious as to whether she actually believes these lyrics or if she's simply telling women what she thinks they want to hear to sell records. The disconnect is that she sings lyrics that are supposedly empowering to women, while dressed scantily clad in order to get men's attention. She could sing the letters to the alphabet gyrating like that and it would still be a hit. The lyrics go something like this:"Girls, girls we run the world . . . Who run this mutha . . . Girls! run th Some of them men think they freak this like we do but no they don't. Make your checks come at they neck. Disrespect us? No they won't . . . It's hot up in here, DJ don't be scared to run this back. I'm repping for the girls who taking over the world. Have me raise a glass to the college grads . . . My persuasion can build a nation. [Endless power?], our love you can devour. You'll do anything for me.

A "lil bit pregnant" is a term we used to use when negotiating M&A deals. It represents the "inflection point" at which you now wield negotiating power because it is too late for the other side to turn back from it's current negotiating position. That said, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorganChase, recently questioned whether the current industry regulations (Dodd-Frank, Volcker Rule, etc.) are too harsh. Notice how he speaks with an authoritative tone, much different from his posture in 2008 when he and other Wall St. CEO's were begging the government for a bail out package. See the video below:

At the press conference after the Heat's Game 3 victory over the Mavericks, CBS sports reporter, Greg Doyle, tried to come at Lebron sideways. It was late and the question seemed so ridiculous that I wasn't sure I heard what I had actually heard. Doyle implied that Lebron was shrinking from "big moments" in the fourth quarter in the series and that's the moment "superstars" become superstars. I actually thought superstars were branded by getting the "W", which Lebron and the Heat did. Either way, Lebron's answer was priceless . . . see below:

"Jordan Rules" in effect While Scottie Pippen thinks Lebron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, former Knicks coach and Pistons great, Isiah Thomas, disagrees. Thomas recently appeared on the ESPN radio and commented on where Lebron ranks relative to Michael Jordan. It takes a keen mind and a high basketball IQ to interpret what they guys are really saying sometimes to the Shock Exchange took the liberty to "interpret" Thomas' comments below:
“I think LeBron has a chance to eclipse Jordan if he continues to improve his game, but where they are right now, you still have to take Jordan as being the better player . . . ”
INTERPRETATION: I hate Michael Jordan. I hated him because not only was he a better player than me, made more money than me, but he also had his own shoe. How dare he? Nike never gave me a shoe so how is some hot shot rookie gonna come in here [NBA] with his own shoe before me? There will neva eva (and forever's a very long time) be another player as good as Jordan . . . in this lifetime or the next. For me to even imply such, illustrates that I am still jealous of Mike.

NOVA Cavaliers, Lightning-Nick Bring the Pain up in Harlem Racks on Racks on Racks all up in Harlem(Young Chris voice) What ya got? She got . . . we got Racks on Racks on Racks all up in Harlem. The talent was stacked and deep at Shock Exchange Comes to Harlem 2011. It was a "banger" as usual with the usual suspects such as Lightning-Nick, NJ Roadrunners, Maryland Ruffriders, Raising Champions, New York Gators, New York Falcons and Kendall-Madison Playaz, and Boys Club of NY battling it out with newcomers like Hudson River Hornets, South Jersey Cannons, NOVA Cavaliers, NYC Phoenix and Westchester Tigers. We ended up with 36 teams, as many as Columbia's gym could comfortably hold over two days, and had to turn away several others in the quest for the most coveted award in all of sports (in my own mind), the Shock Exchange Cup. Levien Gym was packed wall-to-wall at what would turn out to be the hottest ticket in town. At the end of the day, eight teams remained to "show and prove": 14U: New York Gators 1st Place, Rockland Rockets 2nd Place 15U: NJ Roadrunners 1st Place, Hudson River Hornets 2nd Place 16U: Maryland Ruffriders 1st Place, Hudson River Hornets 2nd Place 17U: NJ Roadrunners 1st Place, New Heights-White 2nd Place Thank-you again to Columbia University and everyone who supported this event. Here is a description of the winning teams ( http://clicky.me/5ESE ) and a link to the photo gallery ( http://clicky.me/Gallery2011 ).

One of the main reasons I did not to play in the NBA (in my own mind) is that I didn't want to have a bunch of beautiful women gas me up, take all of my money and then go out an public as "I'm the Shock Exchange's ex-wife" and make a mockery of me. The other reason is that I was "trash" but that's besides the point.

The New York Falcons and their small forward, Mike McCahey (Clarkstown South 2012), are really making a name for themselves this summer. No stranger to Harlem, McCahey is gaining recognition from the wider NYC basketball community, including NYChoops.net (http://nychoops.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1224329) and NYhoops.com. NYHoops.com currently has in him ranked 9th in the class of 2012 for New York City but that could change by the end of the summer. McCahey is getting so much shine that he may need to invest in come hater blockers in order to hide the glare. After seeing the Falcons upend Advanced Hoops in Albany this past weekend, NYHoops.com had the following to say:

Egyptian Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar is accused of assaulting at the Pierre Hotel on East 61st Street. He is former Chairman of the Bank of Alexandria, one of Egypt's leading banks, and is the current Chairman of a salt production company. The maid claims Omar asked her to come up to his room to drop off a box of tissues and that is when the assault occurred. This comes on the heels of an assault on a maid at Sofitel Hotel by IMF leader, Dominique Strauss-Kahn of France ( http://clicky.me/5KwA ). Are these assaults a harbinger of inflation? Maybe the bad behavior of these so-called global business leaders is a sign that the global economy and business as usual, are on the rise.

ESPN is reporting that New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees recently revealed what he thinks was a turning point between the NFL owners and players that ultimately caused the lockout now in Day 73. Brees cites August 20, 2008, the day long time union leader Gene Upshaw died of pancreatic cancer. INTERPRETATION: This is a "diplomatic" way of saying the NFL owners are taking a draconian stance because they think new NFLPA head, DeMaurice Smith, is weak. Brees' exact words are below: "Ever since Gene Upshaw passed away -- I'm just goint to lay it out ther -- the owners saw blood in the water. This is our opportunity to take a significant piece of the (financial) pie back at all costs, a piece that we will never have to give back again. This is our chance, while they don't have leadership, while they're scrambling to find a new executive director. This is our time."

Former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn made headlines recently for assaulting a Sofitel Hotel employee (http://clicky.me/5KwA ). It seems like President Obama peeped DSK's game at a G-20 Conference dinner in September 2009. The President hits DSK with that "Heisman" as he apparently mistook the First Lady for an IMF staffer. Down boy! She doesn't work for the IMF.
