International police organization, Interpol, has issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The warrant comes two days after Wikileaks released over 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables to major news orgainzations, including the New York Times. Assange is wanted for "sex crimes" reported by two women he met at a conference he gave in Stockholm, Sweden on August 14th. Two days later both women filed their complaints together, which I understand have since been dropped. According to Assange's lawyer, "the allegations against him are false and without basis", and represents a smear campaign against him. U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has gone as far as to say that the release of classified information by Wikileaks represents a serious breach of U.S. national security.
According to Barron's, a Phoenix-based radio station is reporting that Apollo Group (APOL), is planning to file documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission outlining a restructuring plan. Apollo owns the University of Phoenix, the country's largest for-profit education company. According to "unnamed sources" who spoke with the radio station, the lay-offs could total upwards of 700 employees. The for-profit education sector has come under fire recently by Congress and The Education Trust, as Washington-based think tank, for targeting low-income and minority students and leaving them with high student debt levels and dim job prospects after graduation. Congress has proposed limiting government aid to for-profit colleges based on the default rate of student loans it guarantees. Some for-profit colleges, government aid represents as much as 90% of their revenue, representing a "de-facto" entitlement program. The lay-offs by Apollo group are expected as it attempts to reduce as expenses on par with the expected reduction in student enrollment, and revenue once the government's new rules take effect. According to the 8-K which the company subsequently filed:
President Obama received 12 stitches in his upper lip after playing pick-up basketball with friends and family over the Thanksgiving holiday, the White House said. According to the White House, the blow was delivered by Rey Decerega of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. While taking a shot, Mr. Decerega inadvertantly hit the president, playing defense, with an errant elbow. The incident occurred at Fort McNair which is located in southwest Washington. Afterwards, Mr. Decerega made the following statement: "I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning. I'm sure he'll be back out on the court again soon."
In my five years of coaching the Shock Exchange the kids and I have had several adventures, or "misadventures, as the case may be. But the most hilarious incident happened to us this summer during our visit to the Apple store to check their new products and how they compared to the competition's. On our way home we were attacked by the "Mad Rapper", turning a routine due diligence trip into the "freestyle from hell". Of course, Shumba stayed by my side as protection while Ralphie, DeSean and Nick ran to safety.
Today Eva Longoria filed for divorce from San Antonio Spurs' All-Star point guard, Tony Parker. Longoria cited "irreconcilable differences" and went through with the proceedings after several overtures from Parker trying to talk her out of it. Sources say the catalyst was hundreds of text messages from Parker to the wife of another Spurs' teammate which took place for over a year. After much speculation, TMZ is reporting that the "other woman" in the scenario is no other than Erin Barry, wife of former Spurs' Brent Barry (http://bit.ly/965m0r). Barry and Parker were teammates from 2004 - 2008. Brent father, former NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, told TMZ the following:
I feel horrible for my son. I'm in shock. I knew [Erin] was moving out of the house soon and SHE was the one that filed for divorce. This is the straw that broke the camel's back . . . [Brent] is going to be devastated. I can't even imagine him going through this ... the divorce was hard enough news.
South Park spoofs Lebron James' Nike ad where he defends "The Decision" to bolt Cleveland for Miami. I liked the commercial which gave Lebron a chance to respond to his critics but he also opened himself up to satire. See below:
