IS BRETT FAVRE DUE AN APOLOGY? PDF Print E-mail

ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Jenn Sterger is reluctant to cooperate with the NFL concerning whether Brett Favre broke the NFL's personally conduct policy with his text messages to her because she cannont truthfully say they were "unwanted" (http://tinyurl.com/23sfd8x)  .  Allison Torres, a personal friend of Sterger, apparently told Steppin Out Magazine that Sterger and Favre regularly texted each other for "some time."  The two way communication would make it difficult to show that Favre's advances were unwanted.  Torres went on to relay the following:

"I just know they kept texting each other back and forth and that he wanted to hook up," Torres said.  "I wouldn't doubt she was enjoying the attention from him."  Torres said that Sterger "would keep saying to me, 'I don't know what to do,'" and that Sterger never said whether she indeed got together with Favre.  Torres also said that she saw the photos that have taken this case to an even higher level of bizarre.  "I actually saw it when he sent it," Torres said.  "We just laughed when he did it."

CLEVELAND BROWNS OWNER LOSES $40MM WITH HEDGE FUND? PDF Print E-mail

ImageBillionaire Cleveland Browns owner, Randy Lerner, is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with a New York-based hedge fund over its refusal or inability, as the case may be, to return his $40 million investment in the fund  (http://bit.ly/bkkxa4).  Lerner is the former Chairman of the credit card company MBNA, as was his late father Al Lerner.  Paige Capital Management filed a lawsuit in Delaware courts against Lerner Master Trust which holds the Lerner family assets, to block it from removing its investment in Paige Capital.  According to court filings, Paige Capital's general counsel, Christopher Paige, was talking all kinds of "recklessness":

[W]e are fully prepared to litigate this matter to the bitter end because we will continue to manage your money, and collect management and incentive fees, until this matter is resolved many years hence . . . You cannot win because you will spend more litigating than we’re fighting over … we decide the best way to protect the funds, and your opinion is irrelevant.

NBA TO REDUCE PLAYER SALARIES? PDF Print E-mail
Image
Between "Stern and a hard place"?
Yesterday NBA commissioner David Stern said there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league is seeking a on-third reduction in player salary costs.  Stern would like "player costs" to drop by $750 million to $800 million. Team owners currently spend about $2.1 billion annually in player salaries and benefits. NBA brass says the owners are in a “diseconomic situation,’’ with projected losses of about $340 million to $350 million this season.  This posture flies in the face of various economic studies claiming the owners are indeed making money.  This is clearly a "shot across the bow" from Stern, in what looks to be a long and protracted negotiation between the NBA and Billy Hunter, head of the NBA Players Union.  Hunter appears be caught "between a rock and a hard place" in that (i) the players will not want to budge on a "hard salary cap" or salary reduction, and (ii) the players and their enablers, don't appear to be realistic on how bad the economy is and the quality of the product the NBA puts out.  I predict that the players will eventually take a pay cut, but Hunter resign or be fired first.

LEBRON RECEIVES "HATEFUL" MESSAGES ON TWITTER PDF Print E-mail
Over the past few weeks there has been some minor "noise" from Lebron James in reaction to people "hating" on his decision to bolt Cleveland for Miami.  Yesterday Lebron took to Twitter in response to comments made by a Cavaliers fan still feeling spurned "The Decision".  However, Lebron's comments seemed to contain a little vitriol which is out of character for James who is usually even-keeled and diplomatic in public.  Below, someone finally got a reaction from Lebron . . .

kingjames: Today is Hater Day. Everyone please let them get their 2 mins of fame and light! I Love You Haters. Continue to make me proud of u guys! LOL

Apparently some Cavs fans, still feeling spurned by "The Decision" tried to get outta pocket with James . . .

@RyanOutrich @KingJames " I am going to take my long as neck to South Beach and get lynched like the [____] I am" thats all I heard

@RyanOutrich: @KingJames u r a big nosed big lipped bug eyed [____]. ur greedy, u try to hide ur ghettoness.

MKaras24 @dwadeofficial @kingjames someone should bring back the kkk just to burn the [____] on the heat! Great idea

I think its clear to say the Lebron-bashing has gotten completely out of hand.  At least one of the aforementioned Twitter accounts has been closed.

Apple Accelerates Expansion in China With iPhone4 PDF Print E-mail
ImageWith a market capitalization of nearly $300 billion, Apple Computer is the second most valuable company in the United States.  Unfortunately for its competitors, Apple's size and market breadth doesn't appear to be abating anytime soon.  The scary part is that China, the world's largest consumer market, accounts for a mere 10% of Apple's overall business.  With the hot selling iPhone4, the company is looking to grow even further in the region.  To address the demands of the Chinese consumer, China Daily reports that Apple will introduce an iPhone4 equipped with receivers for both the CDMA and GSM networks.  Wall Street analysts also cite Apple's strategy of expanding its operaters from China Telecom to include China Mobile as well.  The company is apparently also stepping up its efforts to combat patent infringement from competitors.  As GOOGLE and other U.S. companies have found out, expansion into the region can come with a price.  Will we eventually see "iPhone knock-offs" from the competition?  Stay tuned.

SHOCK EXCHANGE, LARRY JOHNSON, AT PACKER SHOES PDF Print E-mail

ImageYesterday I caught up with former UNLV and NY Knick great, Larry Johnson ("L.J."), at Packer Shoes in Teaneck, NJ.  L.J. was on hand to promote the re-release of the Fila FX-100 ( http://bit.ly/bFgUNR ).  Packer is teaming up with Fila to offer the retro shoes in four different colors.  The shoes were offered exclusively in the U.S. on Thursday October 14th.  Former fans of Johnson not only got to meet him but were privy to a special "4-point play" pack to honor Johnson's famous play that put away the Indiana Pacers and sent the Knicks to the NBA Finals.  We chatted about old times and what he's up to now.  I reminded Johnson that he won the McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk contest (way back when) after he jumped clear over a kid for his final dunk - the first person I ever saw do that.  We hit off immediately and appeared to go "way back" like fuzzy dice around the mirror. Johnson was a super nice guy and was genuinely appreciative that his impact on the game is still being felt.  He also promised to attend Shock Exchange Comes to Harlem April 22-23 2011 at Columbia University.  Here is what went down in 2010 http://clicky.me/ShockExchangeComestoHarlem2010 . . . Thanks in advance L.J.
