WIZARDS' CRITTENDON 'BOUT TO GET HIS BEATING ... ODEN NEXT? PDF Print E-mail
Image The Internet, bloggers, sports columnists and overall basketball community have been abuzz about the gun play between Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittendon chronicled by the Shock Exchange earlier (http://clicky.me/7lz).  Since Arenas has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA, there has been a tremendous amount of speculation about when Crittendon was going to get his beating.  In response to Arenas bringing unloaded guns into the locker room, apparently Crittendon took out his own gun, chambered a round starting singing.  If that is the case, it would make Crittendon's reaction even more dangerous.  The mainstream media loves to see high-profile African-Americans get their "proverbial beating" and has been egging on NBA commissioner David Stern on for weeks.

Well the moment of truth is here.  On Monday January 25th Crittendon pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun possession charge.  In response, the D.C. Superior Court sentenced Crittendon to a year of probation and a fined him $1,250.  On Tuesday January 26th I understand that he met with Stern about the incident and will await the NBA's response.

And just when you thought you had heard it all, nude pictures of the Trailblazers' Greg Oden are over the Internet.  Oden apparently sent the pictures to a female friend who then posted them onto the Internet.  These guys just don't get it.  The NBA is getting hit from all sides --- (i) at the bottom end, the declining economy has led to declining ticket sales and is hurting individual teams; (ii) at the top end, there is speculation that the networks are no longer willing to enter into a bidding war to broadcast sporting events.  It has gotten so bad that Stern is considering allowing people to bet on games in order to generate revenue (where is Tim Donahy when you need him?).  If the NBA loses the popularity and financial footing it enjoyed during the Jordan/Bird/Magic era, somebody is going to play the "scapegoat", and I have a feeling the front office will position themselves so that Mullets (http://clicky.me/Shockims) Arenas, Crittendon, and Oden take the fall.
