TAPPAN ZEE ENDS PEEKSKILL'S "CLASS A" REIGN PDF Print E-mail

It was DQ early
Yesterday I spoke to John McGlaughin of the Rockland Falcons whose son was playing with Tappan Zee against the Peekskill Red Devils ... the five time Class A defending champions ... yeah those Peekskill Red Devils.  I had heard a lot about Peekskill's exciting point guard, Daquan Brickhouse, and I had never seen a high school game in Westchester County so I drove up to White Plains to see what all the fuss was about.  I got there at halftime with Peekskills in command.  However, Tappan Zee stayed within striking distance, only down 44-37 at the end of the third quarter.  Daquan Brickhouse ("DQ") who has already been offered by Central Connecticut State, was the focal point for Peekskill.  He simply played at a different speed, almost defying the laws of physics ... there's mach speed, warp speed, then there's "DQ".  I was curious to see how the alumni from Harlem's own Rockland Falcons http://clicky.me/ShockExchangeComesToHarlem09 ... those Rockland Falcons, would respond.

With DQ breaking down the defense at will and Peekskill's big man owning the boards on both ends, it seemed Peekskill would advance.  But Tappan Zee would not go away . . . a trey here, a stickback there.  After a 6-0 run by Tappan Zee cut the lead to 44-40 with 6:53 left, Peekskill called time-out to stop the momentum.  Both teams traded baskets and Pat Peterson's trey cut the lead to 47-45 with 4:20 left.  Then the game took a dramtic turn ... despite getting good looks inside, Peekskill's basket seemed to have a lid on it.  Tappan Zee hit a three pointer and a Peekskill, out of frustration, drew a technical foul.  The resulting free throws gave Tappan Zee a 50-47 at the 4:00 mark and they never looked back . . . closing out Peekskill in what has to be considered a huge upset.
