UVA LACROSSE PLAYER CHARGED WITH MURDER PDF Print E-mail

Image University of Virginia lacrosse player has been charged with 1st degree murder in the death of a female lacrosse player at the school.  Twenty-two year old George Huguely of Chevy Chase, MD is accused of killing Yeardley Love, also 22, of Cockeysvill, MD.  Charlottesville police responded to a call around 2:15 Monday morning for a possible overdose at Love's apartment.  Once there, they noticed she had experienced physical trauma which led to the homicide investigation and the eventual arrest of Huguely.  No details were given to the evidence making Huguely a prime suspect but the two were known to "have had a romantic relationship but the exact status of that relationship is part of the police investigation."  Ironically, Huguely also attended the Landon School in Bethesda, MD, the alma mater of some of he Duke lacrosse players who were accused of sexual assault.  Huguely himself has a criminal past, having been arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest in 2009.

In March 2006 a woman who had been hired to dance at a party held by the Duke lacrosse team accused three of the players of sexual assault.  Though the charges were eventually dropped, the case received national attention and raised issues of race, privilege and entitlement as the accuser was a poor local African American woman and the students were relatively affluent, white, and from out of town.  It also put a spotlight on the clubby world of elite lacrosse players, the culture that incubates them and their off-field behavior . . . the type of off-field activities that may not have been tolerated had they not been elite lacrosse players.
