Discussing Shock Exchange?
In late April I attended a birthday party for Kevin Powell which was held at DD12, Dame Dash's art gallery in Tribeca.  Powell also used the event to announce is bid to run for Congress against incumbent Ed Townes.  The event was sponsored by hip hop moguls, Dash and Marc Ecko and was covered by several members of the press and African-American community.  The gallery was abuzz with Powell's friends and colleagues from the hip-hop generation who marvelled at his maturation from castmember on the first season of MTV's The Real World to social activist and now congressional candidate.  At the end of the evening, Powell spoke about why he is qualified to run for congress, his vision for Brooklyn and cited those like-minded organizations silently making a difference through the NYC.  To my surprise, Powell mentioned my name and the New York Shock Exchange as one of those grass-roots organizations investing in the future of kids and ultimately, the communities in which we live.

My son and I have played pick-up basketball in the Fort Greene area for years and have known Kevin only as one of the faces on court.  I always like playing with or against Kevin because he likes to bang and he has an understanding of he game, unlike the teenagers today who don't play "team" ball.  I had heard through the grapevine that there was a guy who worked at MTV who also played in the area and whom the younger kids always paid deference to in hopes of getting "the hook-up".  However, I had no clue who the dude was.  One night I happened to be watching BET and noticed that the host of the show looked extremely familiar, but still couldn't place the guy.  A few weeks later I was playing with my son at the local YMCA and in walks Powell.  We spoke briefly . . . he asked about my son and the Shock Exchange and I then was like " .. my man, do you mind if I ask you a crazy question?  Have you ever been on BET?"  He then walked off with a sheepish grin on his face.  From then on I would run into Kevin at church, at the park and at several local spots in the area.  It wasn't until he ran for Congress that I began to put a face to a name and learn about his roots within the hip-hop genre.  I have always tried to support like-minded people and organizations throughout the NYC.  From book signings, to restaurant openings, etc. I have always been there.  So while many residents see Kevin as an activist, media personality or Congressional hopeful, I see him as "that guy I play basketball against in the park" or "that guy from church" trying to make a difference in the community.
