The problem faced by many young people today is that they are not as prepared for the business world as others who may have more exposure to different industries at an early age, more contacts, and more opportunity to receive hands on experience or mentorship in a chosen field. For youth to visualize becoming doctors, lawyers, accountants, bankers, etc. they must come into contact with them at an early age. This program will allow youth to (i) soak up life lessons taught through competition, (ii) learn business skills and give them access to accountants, bankers, and investment management professionals at an early age which will broaden their horizon, and (iii) give professionals an avenue to give back to the community through mentorship.

Anticipated Activities

The kids will be broken into groups of investment teams and will generate investment ideas. The investment ideas will come from the kids who along with the mentors, will pare those ideas down to three or four stocks to invest in. The kids will go through the process of researching the companies through Wall Street Analyst reports, performing due diligence by reading newspaper articles and speaking with people who use the products, and tracking the performance of the stocks over time.

The anticipated outcomes are that the kids will (i) learn how to invest money, (ii) learn about different industries, (iii) improve their reading skills and, (iv) improve their math skills by learning how to compute market capitalizations and price-to-earnings ratios and reviewing high-level financial statements. This will teach kids about how companies raise capital and what that capital is used for – one of the major tenets of business. Ultimately, it will give kids the exposure and the contacts to seek out business careers at an earlier age, increasing their preparation and ultimate chance of success prior to entering their professional careers.
