BENNY BLANCO HATES ON MICHAEL VICK PDF Print E-mail

First Carlito, now Vick?
In the cult film Carlito's Way, Carlito Brigante is released from prison in 1975 in New York.  A former gangster, Carlito surprises his former business associates by vowing to "go straight".  However, he immediately runs back to his old neighborhood in the Bronx where he re-acquaints with former friends, his former girlfriend and eventually secures the funds to invest in a local nightclub.  At the club he encounters Benny Blanco, an up and coming gangster who idolizes Carlito and the life Carlito once lived.  Carlito "disses" Blanco and ignores his overtures to be friends with Carlito.  Blanco keeps frequenting the club seeking Carlito's respect, an altercation between the two eventual occurs and Carlito tosses Blanco from the premises.  Meanwhile, Carlito saves every penny he can in order to move him and his girlfriend, Gail, to Miami where they can build a new life.  While waiting for the train that will eventual lead to Miami and away from his past, Carlito is gunned down by Benny Blanco from the Bronx.  The term "Benny Blanco" has since become synoymous with "hater".

Like Carlito, Michael Vick served 18 months in jail due to his involvement in a dog fighting venture with Purcell Peace and Benny Blanco.  In 2007 the three faced felony charges for operating Bad Newz Kennels.  Allegations included dog fighting, high stakes gambling and the brutal execution of dogs.  Both Peace and Blanco entered into separate plea agreements and implicated Vick as the person who funded the operations.  Vick received the harshest sentence of all three men.  The entire ordeal cost Vick his reputation his financial security (Vick filed for bankruptcy in 2009), and potentially his football career.  After showing contrition, Vick was reinstated into the NFL in 2009 and signed a one year $1.5 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles with another $5 million option for 2010.  As part of his re-statement, the NFL required that Vick not have any more interaction with his Peace, Blanco and other member of Bad Newz Kennels.

On June 25th Vick celebrated his birthday at a nightclub in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Va.  Details are sketchy but rumor has it that Blanco, who wasn't invited, barged into the club and asked Vick "Remember me . . . Benny Blanco from the Bronx?", just prior to throwing birthday cake in Vick's face.  Blanco was escorted from the club and where he was eventually shot, hospitalized and released.  The NFL and authorities are investigating whether Vick knowingly interacted with Blanco and whether Vick was involved in his shooting.  The Eagles are now contemplating releasing Vick (regardless of the outcome of the police investigation), forgoing his $5 million payment due in 2010.  Blanco, Peace and others who turned states evidence on Vick have cost him everything.  And just when you thought Mike had turned recovered and was going to escape his past, Blanco shows up to spoil it all . . . stranger than fiction.
