Warren Buffett Praises LeBron. Is The King's Throne in Jeopardy? PDF Print E-mail

Everybody knows that LeBron envisions himself not simply as a player, but as a brand, and entity.  He also wants to become the next athlete to reach billionaire status.  He has recently been the most marketable professional basketball player in the world.  His recent NBA title only solidified that status.  And none other than Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Ohama, recently praised LeBron's business acumen away from the court.  Buffett isn't the only high profile individual that LeBron has befriended. He is best friends with rap mogul, Jay-Z, and has kept company with Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, in addition to Hollywood moguls and corporate titans.  According to the Oracle:

“You have to get to know him ... LeBron’s not initially really talkative. He’s savvy. He’s smart about financial matters. It’s amazing to me the maturity he exhibits. I know that if I had been famous at that age, I would have had trouble keeping my feet on the ground."

But is King James in danger of losing his crown?  We all know the motif of the athlete who works diligently to get to the top of his sport, only to lose the eye of the tiger and spend more time acquiring new friends, hangers on and sycophants instead of working as hard to stay on top.  If I am competing against LeBron, I would love this article. It takes his focus away from winning chips and places it on supeficial things away from the court like "being a billionaire," or making new friends. While Warren Buffett, JayZ, Steve Ballmer, et. al. ply him with compliments, the competition is working overtime to devise ways to dethrone him.

With his new book, SHOCK EXCHANGE How Inner-City Kids Predicted the Great Recession and the Pain Ahead, Mr. Baker explains what wrong with the NBA and what gives a strategy on how the league could be improved.
